How To Avoid Distractions While Working Remotely

Working remotely is a great way to balance your work and personal life. Though it can be difficult, it can have a positive impact on your career and how you spend your time. However, if you’re a remote worker, you may feel some level of distraction, and that may be more difficult to avoid than you think.

A recent study found that 80% of successful remote workers experience some level of distraction while working. As most remote workers know, distractions can be a major source of time wasting and productivity loss. This is especially true when working remotely. Even if your company provides you with a fantastic, distraction-free office space, you still have to contend with the outside world that may be distracting you.

At some point, we’ve all been confronted with a situation where we’re working on something really important and we need to stay focused. It’s easy to get comfortable and slip into a routine where we start checking social media or email around every 15 minutes. However, this is not an effective way to stay productive and creative.

As remote workers, we do the best we can to keep our work as productive as possible. But as we know, distractions come from all around us—from the mundane (checking the weather, keeping up with the news) to the more serious (the constant stream of emails that we never get around to answering).

While we can’t eliminate every distraction, we can at least be better prepared to deal with them. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you stay productive and focused, even when you’re working remotely.

Use A Website Blocker

One of the most difficult yet widely used distractions while working remotely is simply being able to work at all. Mobile devices are often used for committing unnecessary tasks, making calls, sending emails, and more. These pieces of technology which help us to do our jobs, but also cause us to be distracted, thus creating more work for ourselves.

A website blocker is software that can be used to prevent websites that are distracting to you from loading on your computer. A great example of this is Facebook, which is an entire website meant to connect you to friends, but you may find that distracting.

Enable Airplane Mode On Your Phone

You can spend a lot of time on a computer for work… and a lot of time on a computer for fun. While it’s a smart idea to avoid distractions while working on a computer, it’s almost impossible to do so when you’re using a computer for fun, such as playing a game, watching a movie, or connecting with friends. In fact, research shows that smartphone distractions can be as bad as those from a computer.

It’s one thing to be productive on your computer, but you still have to worry about issues that can crop up on your phone. Whether you’re working on a conference call, traveling for work, or just need to focus on your work, having your phone on airplane mode can help you stay on task.

Turn Off Chat While Working

Remote work isn’t always as productive as you’d like, and some people find it more distracting than others. Gone are the days of the 9-5 workday. The world today is a diverse and interconnected place and we all use the internet and the services that comprise the internet on a daily basis. Although we can unplug and unclutter, we can’t unplug and unclutter the world.

If you’re a software developer working remotely, you probably spend a lot of time communicating with your coworkers via chat. When you’re working on a new project, the first thing you want to do is check out your notes or start asking questions. But, if you keep checking your chat client, you’re going to find yourself wasting time, which you could have spent going even further in your work.

Set A Work Schedule

Working remotely can be a great way to work and still be able to maintain a social life. However, the drawback is that many people who work remotely stop setting a regular schedule. Many people also struggle to stay productive and focused, which can be especially difficult if you don’t have a set schedule.

Use A To-Do List App

Do you use a Task Manager App to keep track of your to-do tasks while working remotely? Well, there are several benefits to using a task list to organize your work.

When working remotely, it’s easy to get distracted by a million things that can easily distract you from the task at hand. This is where to-do lists come in. Whenever I work from home, I make a to-do list, and I try to check it off every day. It makes me feel good about myself when I accomplish my goals, and it keeps me from wasting time or getting off task.

Create A Small Home Office

Many people dream of having a home office, but the reality is that most people cannot afford a dedicated office, or have limited space. In fact, more than 80 percent of Americans have no dedicated space in their homes! While some people may have a corner dedicated to their business, most of them will have to share space, possibly compromising their privacy.

Not only that, it’s even more challenging to focus when you are working from multiple locations, or are working remotely, which is becoming increasingly common these days.

The “small home office while working remotely” question has been debated on the web for years. Some say it’s a good idea, while others claim it’s a terrible idea. Personally, I prefer working in a small environment while I am at home, but feel free to ignore my opinion.

Join A Co-Working Space

Being a remote worker is a great way to work, but it can also lead to major distractions. Avoiding distractions isn’t easy, but there are some simple things you can do to limit digital distractions and focus more on doing your work.

If you are an entrepreneur, freelancer or business owner, you are probably juggling a lot of different tasks at once. You are also likely spending a lot of time sitting at your desk, which can interfere with tasks that require your presence across town.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a centralized location where everyone could come to work. A place that had conference rooms for meetings, team space, training classes, writing space, coffee, snacks, showers, etc. That place is a co-working space.

Take Breaks

While you’re focusing on your work, it’s easy to forget about the rest of your life. That’s why it’s important to take breaks from time to time, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Taking a break from work can be a tough habit to break. After all, you’re usually rewarded with a few hours of downtime. But a little break can actually be a massive boost to your productivity, especially if you plan it ahead of time. There are a few different types of breaks, including a tool break, a mental break, and a physical break.

To keep your mind sharp. Adapting to new situations requires concentration. When you’ve been working for a long time, it’s easy to get distracted by what you’re doing. Breaks give you time to concentrate on other things. It’s also help to keep your mind fresh. Your brain needs to be refreshed every day. When you’re focused on work for too long, you get stuck in a rut. Breaks can help you get back to square.
