Belize has a long shore line, with hundreds of islands and cayes that make up the Belize Barrier Reef System. While these islands are a mixture of privately owned and protected areas, some of them offer very basic accommodations for a holiday destination. The southern part of the country, including the cayes, are a popular destination for water sports and diving because of the proximity to the barrier reef. The hinterland is sparsely settled, the dominant native language is English and the currency is Belize Dollar.
